This 7-Day Namibia Highlights Tour combines Sossusvlei and Deadvlei, the cool Atlantic coastline at Swakopmund and classic wildlife viewing in Etosha National Park. It follows the same pattern used by many top Namibia operators – desert, coast and safari – but with the personal touch of travelling with an owner-run, registered tourist guide from South Africa.
Most travellers quickly realise that five days is simply not enough for Namibia. Distances are long and you need time in each place. This 7-day route solves that problem: it gives you two nights in the desert, two nights on the coast and two nights in Etosha, with a sensible driving rhythm and time to enjoy each destination.
Short on time? I also offer a 5-Day Namibia Desert & Coast Tour focusing only on Sossusvlei and Swakopmund, ideal for travellers who want just the dunes and coast.

7-Day Namibia Highlights – Day-by-Day Itinerary
Day 1 – Johannesburg to Namibia / Windhoek – Into the Desert
We depart Johannesburg and travel north towards Namibia, either overland via Upington and the border, or by a short regional flight to Windhoek where I meet you personally at the airport. From there we continue towards the Namib-Naukluft National Park, home of the famous Sossusvlei area. Late this afternoon you arrive at your desert lodge near Sesriem / Sossusvlei, with time to relax, enjoy a desert sunset and a welcoming dinner under the stars.
Day 2 – Sossusvlei & Deadvlei – Namibia’s most famous dunes
Today is your full Sossusvlei and Deadvlei experience. We leave before sunrise to reach the dunes as the first light touches the sand, creating incredible photo opportunities. Walk amongst some of the highest dunes in the world, visit the white clay pan at Deadvlei with its twisted fossilised trees, and optionally climb Dune 45 or a nearby dune for sweeping views over the Namib. In the afternoon we visit Sesriem Canyon before returning to the lodge for dinner.
Day 3 – Namib Desert to the Atlantic Coast – Walvis Bay & Swakopmund
After breakfast we drive across wide gravel plains and dramatic desert scenery towards the Atlantic coast. Look out for oryx, springbok and ostrich which have adapted to the dry conditions. We stop near Walvis Bay, where flamingos often feed in the lagoon, then follow the coastline to Swakopmund, Namibia’s famous seaside town. This evening you can walk along the jetty, explore the town on foot and enjoy dinner at one of the excellent seafood or German-style restaurants.
Day 4 – Swakopmund – Dunes, desert and optional activities
Swakopmund offers a full menu of adventure and soft activities. Today you can choose a living desert tour to see geckos, chameleons and other small desert creatures, an optional quad-bike ride on the dunes, or a marine cruise from Walvis Bay in search of dolphins, seals and pelicans. You might prefer to simply enjoy the cool sea air, walk on the beach, visit coffee shops and browse local craft markets. I help you plan your day according to your interests.
Day 5 – Swakopmund to Etosha National Park – First game drive
We leave the Atlantic coast and travel north-east towards Etosha National Park, one of Africa’s great wildlife reserves. The scenery changes from coastal dunes to open savanna bushveld. After entering the park, we game-drive our way to the rest camp, looking out for giraffe, zebra, wildebeest, springbok and possibly elephants or lions. In the evening, you can sit at the camp’s floodlit waterhole, where animals come to drink after dark – often including rhino if you are lucky.
Day 6 – Full day in Etosha – Wildlife viewing
Today is devoted to wildlife. We explore different parts of Etosha, stopping at waterholes where animals concentrate, especially in the dry season. Etosha is known for its open landscapes, making it easier to spot game, and the shimmering white Etosha Pan which dominates the park. Expect to see large herds of plains game, with the possibility of predators such as lion and cheetah. After a full day of game viewing, we return to camp for a final night at the waterhole.
Day 7 – Return to Windhoek / Johannesburg
After breakfast we exit the park and drive back towards Windhoek, passing small towns and rural villages along the way. Depending on your onward plans, you can either overnight in Windhoek, connect with a late-afternoon flight back to Johannesburg or continue north for an extended Namibia & Botswana or Namibia & Victoria Falls itinerary. Many guests tell me this 7-day trip feels like two holidays in one – desert & coast plus a classic African safari.

Frequently Asked Questions – 7-Day Namibia Highlights Tour
Is 7 days enough for Namibia?
Seven days is the minimum I recommend if you want to visit Sossusvlei, Swakopmund and Etosha in a single itinerary. It gives you time in each place without rushing every day and follows a similar pattern to the most popular Namibia tours on the market.
Does the tour start in Johannesburg or Windhoek?
Many of my guests start in Johannesburg. You can travel with me overland into Namibia or meet me in Windhoek after a short flight from Johannesburg. I will help you choose the best option based on your time and budget.
What type of accommodation do you use?
I normally use 3–4 star lodges and guesthouses in the desert, Swakopmund and Etosha, similar to mid-range lodges used by well-known Namibia operators, but chosen for personal service and good locations.
Can we extend this itinerary?
Yes. Many travellers add extra nights in Etosha or continue north to Caprivi, Botswana and Victoria Falls. I can customise the tour into a 10-day or 12-day Namibia & Victoria Falls route if you want a longer trip.
