Hlane Royal National Park is Eswatini's largest protected wildlife reserve and one of Southern Africa's finest safari destinations. Covering more than 30,000 hectares of bushveld, open grasslands and ancient woodland, Hlane is famous for its thriving populations of lions, white rhinos, elephants, giraffes and numerous antelope species.

Local Guide Advice
After guiding visitors through Eswatini for many years, these are some of the tips I always share with my guests before we enter Hlane Royal National Park.
Early morning is my favourite time to visit Hlane. Wildlife is usually more active before the day becomes hot, and the soft morning light is perfect for photography.
Hlane offers excellent opportunities to photograph rhino, elephant, giraffe and many bird species. A zoom lens is useful, but even a mobile phone can capture wonderful memories.
If you plan to join a guided rhino walk or spend time around the camp, comfortable walking shoes, a hat and sunscreen are highly recommended.
Wildlife doesn't follow a timetable. Sometimes the best sightings happen after patiently waiting at a waterhole for a few minutes.
Hlane combines beautifully with Mantenga Cultural Village, Mlilwane Wildlife Sanctuary, Ezulwini Valley and the famous Swazi craft markets. That's why I often include these attractions on my Eswatini tours.
Hlane is not about ticking animals off a list. It's about enjoying the African bush, listening to the birds, watching wildlife behave naturally and appreciating one of Eswatini's most beautiful protected areas.

Hlane Royal National Park can be visited throughout the year. Each season offers different wildlife experiences, scenery and photographic opportunities.
May – August
Cool mornings and dry conditions make wildlife easier to spot. Animals often gather around waterholes, making this one of the best seasons for game viewing.
September – October
Warm temperatures, green vegetation and many young animals make spring a wonderful time for photography and nature lovers.
November – March
Lush landscapes, colourful birdlife and dramatic afternoon thunderstorms create beautiful scenery throughout the reserve.
April
Pleasant temperatures and fewer visitors make autumn an excellent season for relaxed game drives and wildlife photography.
If you're joining one of my Eswatini tours, I personally enjoy visiting Hlane early in the morning. The reserve is peaceful, temperatures are comfortable and wildlife is usually more active before the midday heat.
History & Conservation
Hlane Royal National Park is the largest protected area in Eswatini and forms part of the country's commitment to wildlife conservation. The reserve was once used as the private hunting grounds of the Swazi Royal Family before being transformed into a protected national park.
Today, Hlane protects some of Eswatini's most iconic wildlife, including lion, elephant, white rhino and numerous antelope species. The park also plays an important role in breeding programmes and wildlife conservation across Southern Africa.
The name Hlane means "Wilderness" in siSwati, which perfectly describes the vast open bushveld, ancient trees and peaceful atmosphere visitors experience today.

Guided game drives are one of the best ways to search for lion, rhino, elephant, giraffe, zebra and birdlife.
Guided rhino walks may be available with qualified rangers and are subject to safety, weather and reserve conditions.
Visitors should carry water and snacks. Meal arrangements depend on the tour itinerary and the facilities available on the day.
Bring a camera, spare batteries and enough memory space. Early morning and late afternoon usually offer the best light.
Travellers entering Eswatini from South Africa must carry valid passports. Visa rules depend on nationality.
I always suggest that guests keep passports, camera equipment, medication, sunscreen and a light jacket close at hand. On cross-border tours, it is also important to allow extra time for border formalities.
