The King of South African game Parks is the Kruger National Park
and one of the best game-viewing areas in all of Africa.
The figures speak for
themselves: 501 Bird species, 110 reptiles, 51 fish, 31 amphibians, 142 mammal
and over 23,100 plant species have been recorded here. The region itself is
enormous, extending from the Crocodile river in the South to the Limpopo in the
North, from the wooded foothills of the eastern escarpment to the humid plains
of the Low veld.
It certainly fulfills most visitors' fantasies of seeing magnificent herds of
game roaming across acacia-studded stretches of savannah and, of course, is home
to the Big Five. The park is 120 km wide and over 450 km long, conserving 21,497
sq. km, an area the size of Wales or Israel. Despite its size, it is very well
developed, with a good network covering 2600 km of roads and numerous camps,
making a Kruger safari relatively hassle free.

The Republic of South Africa occupies 1 223 410 sq. (472 659 sq. miles) at
the southern-most tip of the African continent, stretching from the Limpopo
River in the north to Cape Agulhas in the south. It is five times the size of
Britain, twice as big as France and about one-eighth of the size of the United
States. The West Coast borders the cool South Atlantic Ocean while the Eastern
Coastline runs along the warmer Indian Ocean. To the north, South Africa borders

Our Mineral Wealth
The unique and extensive geological formations in South Africa are the origins
of our mineral wealth. The Witwatersrand Basin holds a considerable share of the
world's gold reserves, as well as some uranium, silver, pyrite and osmiridium.
This basin yields some 98 per cent of South Africa's gold. The Bush veld complex
in Mpumalanga and Limpopo produces more than half of the worlds chrome ore. Ores
of vanadium, iron, titanium, copper, nickel, and fluorspar are also found here.
South Africa also possesses some of other important mineral reserves
- The Transvaal System contains more than 80 per cent of the worlds manganese
reserves, as well as significant amounts of iron ore.
- Mpumalanga and Kwazulu Natal have significant coal and anthracite reserves
- The Phalaborwa Igneous Complex contains extensive deposits of zinc ores, as
well as copper, titanium, phosphate, iron, vermiculite and zirconium
- The Northern Cape has significant deposits of zinc ores, as well as copper
and lead
- Diamonds (kimberlitic, alluvial, and marine), as well as titanium, iron and
zircon are found allover the country

The Kruger National Park has a rich natural and cultural
history that can be traced back to early mankind There is a substantial
evidence that prehistoric man roamed the region between 100 000 and 500 000
years ago.
The settlement of Stone Age man between 30 000 and 100 000 years ago is
supported by findings of cultural artifacts and archaeological sites. More than
100 rock paintings and engravings are evidence of the San's (nomadic
hunters-gatherers) movements through the area. There is also evidence of the
presence of Iron Age man from around 1500 years ago.

There are over 250 cultural heritage
sites in the Kruger Park including almost 130 recorded sites with rock art.
Archaeological sites range from early Stone Age (about a million years ago) to
evidence of various Iron Age civilizations. The public can view the following
